As a platform for collaboration between representatives from the worlds of industry, science and politics, IN4climate.NRW is unique in Germany in offering a space in which to develop innovative strategies for a climate neutral industrial sector. Since it accounts for around 19 per cent of North Rhine-Westphalia’s greenhouse gas emissions, the industrial sector bears a particular responsibility when it comes to climate protection. New – and in some cases radical – production processes and methods are required if it is to remain highly competitive in the future, while also developing the region into a carbon neutral industrial base in the long term. At the same time, a suitable infrastructure and appropriate conditions are needed to enable the transition to a carbon neutral industrial sector. The Ministry of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitalisation and Energy (MWIDE) in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) has launched IN4climate.NRW to shape this process of change together with the relevant companies. As a central platform that aims to realise a carbon neutral industrial sector, IN4climate.NRW would like to do more than simply accelerate the transformation of NRW’s industry. The resulting findings and the innovations developed will also be shared with other countries in order to support a global discourse and international collaborations.
