The rise of CO2-based polymers and chemical building blocks

Technological breakthroughs for an efficient and low-cost utilization of CO2

nova-Institute is proud to host the “5th Conference on Carbon Dioxide as Feedstock for Fuels, Chemistry and Polymers“ at 6-7 December 2016 in Cologne, Germany. More than 250 participants from 30 countries and 20 exhibitors are expected.

Today’s Focus: CO2-based Chemicals and Polymers

The session on CO2-based Chemicals and Polymers will show first implementations of CO2-based polymer production and what’s coming up next.
Among others, Lisa Dyson, CEO of Kiverdi, Inc. (US), will give a talk about the transformation of carbon gases into bio-based products at Kiverdi. Kiverdi’s platform technology is able to produce a diverse range of high value, renewable fatty acids, triglyceride oils and hydrocarbons, to serve important markets such as sustainable intermediates for surfactants, polymers, and lubricants.
Researchers from VITO (BE) will present VITO’s activities in the area of CO2 utilization via electro-biotechnology and gas fermentation and will present the latest results of selected projects and activities. The focus is on CO2 utilization as feedstock for the synthesis of biopolymers using biotechnology as core process.
For Covestro (DE), 2016 was marked by important developments that will have a fundamental impact on the future of the chemical industry. The company opened its demonstration plant in June 2016 for the production of CO2-based polyether polyols – delivering commercial product qualities at industrial scale. Dr. Christian Gürtler will give a comprehensive overview of new activities of Covestro in CO2 utilization.
Bruce Dannenberg, CEO of Phytonix Corp. (US), will provide a technology how his company is employing synthetic biology to address the global challenges of climate change and the production of cost competitive, sustainable chemicals and fuels. He will present the breakthrough technology for the production of customized cyanobacterial microbial chemical factories for applications across a broad range of climates.
Also Photanol B.V. (NL) is using an approach for cyanobacteria to produce chemicals form CO2. Ross Gordon will show a way to use these organisms to produce a high purity lactic acid.
