Reinventing Fossil Carbon Conversion Processes, Electrochemistry or Using Microbes, a Wide Choice – Session on CO₂ Conversion Technologies

As an inert molecule, CO₂ requires an energy source in the form of hydrogen and appropriate catalysts to be converted into the desired product. Today, long-established fossil carbon processes such as Fischer-Tropsch for syngas production and direct CO₂ hydrogenation for methane and methanol synthesis are at commercial scale for CO₂-based fuels and chemical production.

CO₂-based methanol and CO₂-based hydrocarbons currently have a combined production capacity of over 1.5 Mt/a and are expected to grow strongly by 2027. In addition to these chemical conversion processes, electrochemical CO₂ -conversion and the use of biotechnological systems have emerged as promising and relevant technologies for CO₂ utilisation. These overarching conversion technologies harbour an incredible diversity of specific, high-potential solutions for efficient CO₂ utilisation.

The following speakers will give international insights into the variety of chemical and biotechnological CO₂ conversion technologies: Sessions on CO₂ Utilisation Technologies I & II:
